Talking Planet
Project Summary:
Talking Planet is an animated language resource designed to support indigenous communities in reviving their cultural languages.
The simple storylines follow three cute characters - Mimi, Pip and Momo - as they go about their daily routines together, empowering families to start using their cultural languages as part of everyday life.
Description:
The key goals of Talking Planet are:
1. To meet an urgent need for quality resources in the endangered language sphere.
2. To present language learning as non-intimidating and fun, giving children and their families the confidence to use words and phrases in context with their every day activities.
3. To provide useful language that encourages children to communicate their needs, as well as providing them with an introduction to grammatical structure which enables them to expand their learning further using other language resources available in the community.
Talking Planet uses a pedagogy based on Total Physical Response (TPR). TPR is how we all learn our mother tongues, and is a gentle, natural method of absorbing a language through context, repetition and association.
Talking Planet collaborates with education boards, government departments and not-for-profit organisations all over the world. Funding is sourced by the cultural partner - due to the global nature of the project, local organisations are best placed to access the culture and heritage grants provided by their own countries.
To date, Talking Planet has been made in Mi'kmaw (partners Mawi Ta'mk Society, Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island), Cape Breton Gaelic (partner The Feis Eilean with The Office of Gaelic Affairs, Government of Nova Scotia), King Island Inupiaq (partners Kawerak Inc, Katirvik Cultural Center), Innu-aimun Sheshatshiu and Innu-aimun Natuashish (partner Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education Board). Each version is a careful collaboration between Language Keepers and our team at Talking Planet.
