Project Summary:
Ultimately my goal is to support and promote minority rights and human rights, with Cornwall and the Cornish people specifically at the forefront of my work.
I am, through my work, raising the issues and awareness of democracy, hegemony and human rights in Cornwall. Amongst the ways that I do this are locally and in person, online through social media, for example, LinkedIn and Facebook. Through Rise Up and other projects designed to challenge the suppression of minoritised voices.
In relation to the subject matter I offer a range of different accessible options, for example, predesigned courses, individualised/tailormade options, hybrid option of in person and online.
Description:
I run a small self-funded language school, which I established in 2001. At that time, the Cornish language was not recognised as a European Regional or Minority Language. I decided to provide a home for the Cornish language here in the community, where it could be positioned alongside other more frequently used languages. In 2014, the Cornish people were recognised by the UK Government as being ‘on a par with the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish’.
I have a history of dynamic engagement with the relevant issues having been the initiator of Lostwithiel as a Transition Town back in 2006 and I am known within the Cornish and wider community for my extensive work on making the connections between language, culture, place, nature, climate and social justice.
I undertook a research project in 2007, at the Institute of Cornish Studies, as the dissertation for my Masters degree. The title of this was ‘Seeking Congruence: A feminist action-research approach to establishing a sense of congruence between myself as a Cornish person and the Cornish language.’
My language school has won a number of awards, notably special recognition in 2009 through an award for 'Long-standing Commitment to Sustainability in Cornwall' in the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.
I am currently working to finalise the first in a series of 5 pre-designed courses that will be available to all: to those in Cornwall, to those who identify as Cornish from around the world, and to all others who are interested. This first pre-designed course acts as an introduction to the language Kernowek, while looking equally at Cornish dialect (Cornu-English), so offering the opportunity to explore Cornish Identity through its characteristic language forms. The goal of this particular and unique learning experience is to help create a sense of connection for people between the language forms, the history of Cornwall and the issue of Cornish identity.
