Panel Discussion & Q&A: What AI Can and Cannot do for Minoritised Languages
The fourth RISE UP Online Networking Event took place online on May 22nd, 2025.
As AI is a hotly debated topic, especially in regards to its potential for minoritised languages, RISE UP aimed to shine a light on recent scientific findings and perspectives. The goal of the event was to open up the conversation for both researchers and community stakeholders, in order to clarify the benefits and limits of this new technology, and to find a good and realistic path forward. During the three hours of the event, various approaches to AI in the context of minoritised languages were presented, both from a community and a research perspective. The second half of the event was structured as a moderated panel discussion, where different actors shared their insights, and anyone was welcome to bring up their questions and ideas.
By hosting these networking events, we aim to provide participants with the opportunity to gain knowledge in the field of minoritised language research and activism, and also for various minoritised language groups to strengthen their communities, get to know one other and learn from each other's challenges and solutions.
