HOW TIMELY

Project Status:

Running

Project Website:

Project Summary:

The Erasmus+ project "Handling Our Wor(l)ds in Translation: Intersemiotic strategies for Minority and Endangered Languages’ promotion among Youngers" aims to promote the revitalization of Minority and Endangered Languages (MELs) among young people, particularly in secondary schools. The project focuses on using Intermedial/Audio-visual Accessibility & Translation (AVAT) strategies as an innovative pedagogical tool. It intends to counter the decline in the use of MELs and their underrepresentation in the media, especially among teenagers.

Description:

As part of the European Union's commitment to comprehensive language learning, linguistic diversity, and heritage awareness and preservation, HOW TIMELY promotes the revitalisation of minority and endangered languages (MEL) among young people through Accessibility and Intermodal/Audiovisual Translation (AVAT), focusing on three Member States and MEL (Catalan, Sardinian, Irish) and building on the Horizon Rise Up project (https://www.riseupproject.eu/).

The teacher training and pedagogical activities created in HOW TIMELY, focusing on 3 AVAT modalities (subtitling, dubbing, audio description), will be implemented in 3 EU partner schools through an eTwinning project involving around 60 participants.

The project encourages a holistic approach to MEL teaching and learning, following the recommendations of the European Digital Education Action Plan, including integrating the linguistic dimension into educational programmes and ensuring that students achieve adequate levels of language proficiency. the cross-curricular incorporation of new technologies in language learning, focusing on the growing linguistic diversity in schools, will foster the creation of intercultural environments sensitive to MEL.

Composition and characteristics of the Lead Partner (PI) and the Partnership:
  • Università degli Studi Roma Tre (Italy, PI)

  • Fundació Universitària Balmes (Spain, partner)

  • Dublin City University (Ireland, Partner)

  • Scuola - Convitto Nazionale Canopoleno (Italy, Partner)

  • Scuola - Instituto Alexandre de Riquer (Spain, Partner )

  • Scuola - Coláiste Ghlór na Mara (Ireland, Partner)

  • Associazione LINGUAPAX International (Spain, Partner)

The consortium is established in line with the main objective of enabling participating organisations to increase the quality and relevance of their activities, expand and strengthen their networks of partner organisations, and increase their capacity to operate jointly at a transnational level, boosting the internationalisation of their activities, exchanging or developing new practices and methods, and pooling and comparing ideas.

All partners have complementary expertise in inclusion, linguistic diversity and cooperation between higher and secondary education institutions, and the partnership reflects the different histories, statuses and situations of the MELs involved.

Main Objectives: The project's General Objectives (GOs) are:
  • Promote linguistic diversity and the transmission and revitalization of MELs.

  • Dynamize MEL teaching in secondary schools within an inclusive education framework.

  • Promote innovative teaching methods and communication among MEL teachers across Europe.

  • Utilize digital tools to create and share pedagogical activities with the community of MEL teachers.
