Speak on Screen: Translating Audiovisual Content in Minority Languages
In collaboration with the ERASMUS+ Project HOW TIMELY, RISE UP hosted an online, hands-on workshop series on how to dub and/or subtitle audiovisual content into minority/minoritised languages, called “Speak on Screen: Translating Audiovisual Content in Minority Languages”.
The workshops took place in November and December 2025 on three dates: In the first session, participants learned the basics of dubbing and subtitling and how to apply them to translate materials into their minoritised languages. Before the second session, an open support-focused session to share experiences and discuss any issues encountered, participants were asked to autonomously work on their projects.
The final session took place on December 10th, 2025 as a public event showcasing the participants’ work and featuring a roundtable with experts from different sectors, moderated by Mònica Perenya (Linguapax). At the beginning of the event, two workshop participants shared their subtitled videos, and talked about their experiences. In the second half of the event, the roundtable participants Cadi Catlow (Talking Planet), Maria Montroy Ferré (UJI/UAB), and Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed (Cardiff University, Plurilingmedia WG1) discussed questions such as the role of audiovisual content in minority languages for supporting speakers, language learning and language revitalisation.
